Study suggests hallucinogen in magic mushrooms could help smokers quit

A study published in The American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse suggests that psilocybin, the hallucinogen found in magic mushrooms, can help smokers quit smoking.

Psychiatrist and lead author Matthew W. Johnson said hallucinogenic experiences “tend to reframe life priorities, with pure pleasure seeking dropping, and other aspects increasing (family, connection, higher principles). We are also exploring biological changes and are suspecting there may be long term changes in brain network dynamics, although we don’t have definitive evidence for that yet.” However, the study had no control group and only featured 15 smokers, nine of whom were still abstinent 30 months after the study.
